Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do.
I’m Tommy Gabriel, and I’m an eighth generation El Pasoan with a passion for improving the city we call home for future generations. I’ve spent the last eight years working in the financial industry and joined WestStar Wealth Management in 2020. I currently serve as an Investment Advisor, where I have the privilege of working with individuals as they implement strategies to assist in achieving their financial goals. I am the current YLS Advisory Board President and also have the privilege of serving on the Board of Directors for two other amazing local non-profit organizations. When I’m not at work or volunteering you can usually find me smoking up some Texas BBQ with an El Paso twist.
What inspired you to join YLS?
I joined YLS following an invitation from a longtime friend, who at the time was serving as an Advisory Board member. After attending my first Wine and Wisdom at the Medical Center of the Americas (MCA), I was impressed with the organization, because normally, when you see that many young professionals gathered together, working for a common purpose, it’s usually at a bar. I knew then that I wanted to be a part of that kind of group.
What has been your favorite YLS experience so far?
My experience in YLS has been phenomenal. I’ve made new friends, strengthened longtime relationships, and gained insight into the needs of the community. The comradery is just a piece of the puzzle, though, and while there are many memories I could draw on, the YLSxRealize Board Training Program helped us learn how to be effective fiduciaries and serve on a board rather than “sit” on one.
Why would you suggest someone join YLS?
Whether somebody is looking for a networking opportunity or wanting to learn how to get involved with our community, YLS offers opportunities for the next generation of leaders in El Paso to connect to one another, grow both professionally and personally, and begin a lifelong passion for philanthropy.
